2025 Q2 Professional Standards Committee Update

Update from the Professional Standards Committee

As we move forward with mediated negotiations with the company, it is understandable that, at times, tensions in and around work may run high. As Professional Aviators however, it is imperative we maintain our composure and commitment to our profession.

We simply cannot allow our personal feelings to demonstrate while upholding the confidence of both our peers and our flying public. If you are feeling as though personal feelings may be affecting you at work, we encourage you to reach out to your Professional Standards Committee for help.

It is our time to show our worth to both ourselves and the company. Let us remain steadfast in our commitment to be our best.

Feel free to reach out at any time with questions or concerns.

In Solidarity,
Stephen Wheeler

2025 Q1 Professional Standards Committee Update

Your Professional Standards committee would like to take the time to first thank its volunteers. Working in a Union position can often be challenging and mainly done behind the scenes so very few get to see just how hard our Committee members are working for their fellow pilots. A Union will only be as strong as the people who volunteer make it. And those of you that are volunteering, we commend your efforts. I encourage all of our pilots to express this message.

  1. As stated this has been a busy year for your Prostandards Committee. On top of our normal workload we have branched out to help with our Fatigue program and Instructor Pilots. First Officer Nick Bordes has also joined our team to help assist with any issues or challenges our International Pilots May be having. If you are an International Pilot and having issues please feel free to reach out to Nick either directly or through our prostandards@apa2118.org email.
  2. This year and the past have been especially trying for our pilot group. We implore you to maintain professionalism and be respectful of our fellow pilots and other work groups regardless of what is going on around you. Control what you can control. If you are having an issue with someone or something from another workgroup we strongly encourage you to file and AirSMS. Too often reports are filed from one side and our pilots are left out to dry. The AirSMS can help explain scenarios in greater detail and help avoid one sided understandings.
  3. It has come to our attention that pilots have been changing their names in the CrewMobile app. While pilots changing from a formal name to a preferred one is perfectly acceptable and encouraged. We need to make sure that we are keeping it Professional as this is an important tool for our crew members in identifying their fellow crew-members.

ProStandards Committee Update: 12/31/24

Your Professional Standards Committee has seen a very busy and productive 2024!  We’ve added five new committee members with the goal of assisting our pilots more broadly,  amid the many challenges we face.

Chief Pilot Referrals

This past year we’ve seen an increased amount of Chief Pilot referrals. What this means for our Pilot group is, instead of Section 18 meetings, the Chief Pilots have the option to refer cases to the ProStandards Committee.  Once referred, and accepted by APA 2118,  the company can no longer discipline or discuss said issue with the Pilot – so long as the ProStandards Committee is able to find a success resolution (refer ProStandards LOA). The Chief Pilot Referrals help our pilots avoid needless disciplinary hearings and ultimately provide better resolutions. This positive trend requires a commitment of respect and trust among the Chief Pilot Office and your ProStandards Committee.

Fatigue Reports

The Safety Committee has enlisted our help in resolving Fatigue Reports.  Essentially, fatigue calls may be either accepted or rejected by the Review Board but require follow up.  If follow-up is needed, the designated ProStandards representative will make the call.  This new procedure allows our Union to first address any abnormalities with fatigue reports, instead of the company – even if they are rejected.

ProStandards Instructor Committee

Our new Prostandards Instructor Committee is up and running and exists for any Check Airman or Instructor pilots who may require assistance. We recognize that pilots involved in our training department may require a different approach than one used for line pilots. With this is in mind. we have added pilots who are specifically trained in this area and now able to help those requiring assistance.   Any Check Airman or Instructor Pilots having issues should reach out to the ProStandards Committee with any questions or concerns.

A goal of the ProStandards Committee has always been to find ways to best serve our Pilot group while staying true to our core mission. With your support and trust,  we aim to continue that trend in to 2025.

Fraternally,

Your Professional Standards Committee
